Birds in the Altaic family of languages are regarded as magical animal which have some power of making people overcome the reverence of nature and the fear of inevitable desease and death. This view on birds is reflected in ancient Korean founding myths, especially in Koguryu. Many pictures of a crow with three foots which symbolizes the sun in the founding myth, are discovered in the wall paintings of tombs made at the period of Koguryu. It is thought that the crow is related with agricultural organization of that society. Bird patterns of Koguryu are roughly divided into two kinds, pictures of wall paintings and ornaments made of gold or bronze. At first, as one of representative pictures, a red chinese phoenix of the pictures of Four Gods is well known. Red bird is an imaginary animal which originated from China, but when it appeared in Koguryu, it has some color of Buddism and the unique and grand power of Koguryu. Secondly, bird patterns of ornaments are seemed to be influenced by Scythe-shaped tail. They are expressed by the crow with three foots, which has the wings like flames.
