Having been chosen as one of the subjects in school in middle of 19C, as it
has always been, art education is being threatened to lost its position as school
subject, which is called ‘crisis of art education’. The cause of this could be rooted
from philosophical tradition which regards art one of emotional area. Through out
the history of art education, art has been considered the subject contributing to
development of creativity, self expression, developing emotional sentiment, fostering
sense of aesthetic.
But due to the influence of the study of Cognitive science and Postmodernism,
which has been revolutionary to the whole educational area since middle of 20C,
art could be accessible with new perspective. Accordingly, art is not only
emotional, but cognitive, creative, intuitive, in other words, integrating subject.
Also finds its value in realizing pluralism education.
In this study, through studying art as subject with more advanced prospective
and examination of its educational value, I have tried to find art's own value in
meeting all of the requirement in this time and for the future.
As a result, the newly focused value of art in school is followed by first,
the art helps one to foster ability to think with more balanced and integrating
inference. Second, ultimately the art helps one to foster ability think with visual
literacy and critical thinking. Third, the art helps one to foster ability to solve
problem in reality. Finally, the art as means of the communication to the rest of
the world, it leads our lives to embrace various values in other culture.
