영문초록

The purpose of the study was to investigate the instructional strategies for children to develop their appreciation and comprehension on the ancient Korean art and art culture, especially the art culture of Unified Shilla. This study included 1) the instructional strategies for children to develop the abilities to appreciate and comprehend the art culture of Unified Shilla, which is the center of the ancient Korean art culture; and 2) the analysis of findings and results of the experimental and special project, called ‘Shilla Village Project’, which was carried out for children to enhance and expand their viewpoints on Korean traditional art and art culture. It is said that art culture records and reflects the culture of the times. Through examining art culture, we could comprehend and understand the past and present, and develop a vision for the future. It is needed that we understand the importance and the value of art culture which inherited from our ancestors, and establish national identity through appreciating cultural inheritance. The Ancient Korean art culture has developed drastically due to the introduction and influence of Buddhism after the latter of the half of the 4th century. It is regarded that most of the remaining art culture and cultural assets in Korea are limited to the artworks which were influenced and based on the Buddhist spirits and contents. It is said that the very peak of blossom of the Korean art culture through the history is, indeed, the period of Unified Shilla, which is called the time to accomplish unifying culture of three nations as well as three nations themselves. The children who participated in the ‘Shilla village Project’ had a keen interest and understanding about the ancient Korean art-cultural inheritance and properties, and developed affirmative self-cognition, which is built up through the cooperative relationships and an enthusiastic social and cultural interaction with their peer group, teachers and experts during the project. In addition, with the help of various activities to come in contact with art symbols in the project, it is acknowledged that the children were able to appreciate and comprehend the way of creative expression and the art symbols which the ancient Korean art culture had.
