사회과학과 교육학계의 과학주의적, 실증주의적 연구 경향의 주도 속에서도, 주관적이고 개별기술적 접근을 특징으로 하는 질적 연구가 최근에 많이 이루어지고 있다. 이들 연구는 교육 연구에서도 그 탐구 지평을 확장시킴으로써 새로운 통찰력과 창의적인 관점을 키워줬 지만, 이를 읽는 사람들에게 흡족한 설득력을 주지는 못했다. 이렇게 된 이유로 우선, 질적 연구가 우리에게 이미 익숙해진 정형화된 연구설계나 가설검증 절차를 거치는 계량적 연구 에 비해, 그 정련도나 객관도와 일반화 수준이 취약하기 때문이라는 시각을 들 수 있다. 그 렇지만 이보다 더 큰 이유로 어떤 연구주제나 연구문제를 질적 연구로 수행하고자 할 때, 왜 이 연구주제나 연구문제를 질적으로 연구해야 하는지에 관한 정당화(justifying) 진술이 매우 미흡했기 때문이라는 점을 들 수 있다. 단순히 면담이나 관찰 등으로 얻은 자료를 연 구자가 분석하고 해석했다고 서술하는 연구 동향에 독자들이 만족할 수는 없었을 것이다. 그동안 질적 연구의 타당화에 관한 논의는 더러 있었으나, 수행하고자 하는 연구주제나 연구문제의 질적 연구를 위한 정당화 진술이 연구의 서론 부분에 들어간 연구는 극히 드물 었다. 이러한 정당화 진술이야말로 정형화된 연구설계나 가설검증 절차를 거치는 계량적 접 근의 연구절차를 대신할 질적 연구 논리의 첫걸음이며, 이래야만 비로소 그 질적 연구결과 도 충분한 설득력을 얻게 될 것이다. 이 연구는 질적 연구유형들 중 내러티브 연구법과 담론분석법을 정당화할 수 있는 구체적 인 정당화의 논거들을 탐색하기 위한 것이다. 이들은 연구대상의 목소리와 숨결 및 경험 등 에 초점을 맞추면서 그의 개별성, 독특성, 고유성, 다양성, 주체성, 자율성, 능동성, 맥락과 상황의 다원성과 민감성, 감성과 기분 등 개인적 차원은 물론, 사회적 실재나 정책의 구축과 정과 그 이슈 및 그와 관련된 실용적 정보를 얻을 수 있게 해준다. 특히 내러티브 연구법은 과거ㆍ현재ㆍ미래라는 시간성, 상호작용, 상황이라는 내러티브적 공간 속에서 자신들만의 삶 을 살아가고 있거나 살아온 학생과 교사들의 삶의 의미를 이해할 수 있게 해주고, 담론분석 법은 특정 담론과 그 맥락 속에서 개인과 권력의 역학의 실재를 알아 현장 개선에 유용한 정보를 얻게 해준다. 정당화 근거로 제시된 관련 문구들은 연구자가 나름대로 구성한 것이다. 이들은 관련 질 적 연구를 시작하면서 그 정당화 진술을 구체적으로 어떻게 해야 할지 난감해 하고 있는 사 람들에게 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다.
This study tries to search for justifying or defending phrases and their theoretical bases for narrative analysis and discourse analysis methods. Even if there have been increased qualitative researches in social sciences and education fields, many qualitative researches lack legitimatizing phrases or statements which can justify or defend their research methods suited for their research themes and research problems. Even though beginning researchers are suffering from so many confusing array of genres and classifications of qualitative researches, they need to justify the choice of their qualitative research methods. If a study which adopts a certain qualitative research protocol is to show persuasiveness in their research findings, it firstly needs to state justifying phrases in the introduction part of the study and suggest coherent epistemological and methodological tone of the research and the research question. Justifying phrases for qualitative researches may be abstracted as follows. Qualitative research in general helps us explore individual’s everyday life, his/her own vivid experience and meaning-constructing process in interacting with others, and its’ relation to wider society and history, and so on. Narrative analysis can make us examine actors’ own experience and his/her interpretation of social and historical events. Discourse analysis helps us reveal the tacit strategies of ideologies and dominant groups.
