As cold war dissolution education and partition awareness dissolution education, the social-cultural
approach has limits as the new paradigm for unification education. This study aims to analyze and
review the educational materials of the Education Center for Unification according to the
systematic-ideological approach in order to present the right direction for unification education as cold
war dissolution education. Educational material analysis were carried out along the four subjects of
partition, North Korea, unification, and unification education, and the results are the following:
First, writings on the partition of the Korean Peninsula emphasize tradition and North Korea's
invasion of the South. For unification, this conservative and confrontational understanding about the
partition must be transformed into an objective and unification-orientated understanding. Second,
understanding about North Korea has dual aspects as both a friend and an enemy. However, unification
education should adopt an internal critical approach towards North Korea, and promote understanding
about North Korea. Third, understanding about unification was examined by dividing it into unification
plan and unification blueprint. Writings on the unification plan criticize North Korea's unification plan,
and emphasize the properness of South Korea's 3rd unification plan. However, there is a need for
greater unification-orientated and versatile approach than the "low-level unification" approach taken in
the recent inter-Korean summit meeting. Unification blueprints presents liberal-democracy, which
emphasizes liberalism, but South Korean's form of liberal-democracy will cause problems as the
universal blueprint. Therefore, rather than liberal-democracy, social-democracy, which pursues welfare,
freedom, democracy, should be actively examined. Fourth, understanding about unification education is
limited because of its dual aspects, and so an active unification education is required.
Even though there is a positive flow of unification-orientated educational material suitable to the
changing times, it is accompanied by a negative flow of surviving hostile feelings between the North
and the South. Unification education material must follow the new perspective of
systematic-ideological approach and promote direct and expanding understanding about people and
democracy, peace education, active integration with the domain of democratic citizen education, and
use the dialectic synthesis unification approach.
