The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary nitrate supplementation on oxygen efficiency during
sub-maximal exercise. Eight healthy university male participated in sub-maximal exercise test(70% VO2max) on a cycle ergometer
before and after dietary nitrate supplementation(natural beetroot juice). Pulmonary ventilation, oxygen uptake, MVO2, SPO2, blood
pressure, and heart rate were measured at 15's intervals by a computerized gas analyser. A comparison of before and after
nitrate supplementation, oxygen consumption and SPO2 did not show statistically significant differences. However, both myocardial
oxygen demand(MVO2) and heart rate after nitrate supplementation were significantly lower compared with before nitrate
supplementation. In conclusion, this study showed that dietary nitrate supplementation in the form of natural beetroot juice
resulted in improved the oxygen efficiency in sub-maximal exercise conditions.
