This qualitative study explores the adaptation strategies of migrant youths who accompanied their parents to Korea and spent their adolescence there. The results show that the effects of migrant experience on a youth can differ greatly according to the social class he/she belongs to. While a youth of upper class is able to incorporate his migrant experience into his cultural capital, by relying on his parents' social and economic resources and their full support, a youth of working class, lacking such resources, is highly likely to move on a low grade circuit of globalization, and suffer from economic difficulties, cultural differences, and discriminations. However, even under such unfavorable conditions, migrant youths from lower classes employ various strategies to overcome both overt and covert social mechanisms of exclusion that are in place, in order to adjust to his new surroundings and find his place in it. And while they often criticize the attitude and viewpoints of the mainstream society towards them by uncovering such mechanisms, they more often employ internal strategies as protective mechanisms. According to the stance a youth assumes towards the mainstream society, his/her strategy can be classified into one of three types: 1. Positively assimilate oneself into Korean society; 2. Keep one's distance from Korean society; 3. Maintain a balance between assimilation and keeping one's distance. The narratives of the migrant youths show the need for an educational infrastructure better suited for a multi-cultural society.
