This study was conducted in order to investigate play process, play content, play behavior and communication strategies between the mother and the child in a free play situation. 65 pairs of mother-child dyad participated in this study. The participants played with supermarket play sets for 15 minutes. The whole play sessions were videotaped by trained observers. The results of the study were as follows. First, the mothers and children in this study spent most of their play time exploring the materials provided. Second, the mothers and children in this study played with bar-code most of the time. Third, participants in this study took actor\'s role during their play session. Fourth, communication strategy of asking for information was mostly used by mothers, while communication strategy of providing information was mostly used by children. Few suggestions for parent education were made based on the results of this study.
