The paper has been tried to find out the attribute of competence in art
education by the qualitative approach. In order to explore the essence of
competence in real experience, the paper investigates the qualitative approach in
art education with constructivism and interpretive paradigm as methodological
position in research. Data has been collected and interpreted in-depth interviews,
participant observations, and a document analysis.
As a result, core competencies-centric of ‘Accomplishment’, ‘Sincerity’,
‘Novelty’ and ‘Routineness’ has drawn by FGI(Focus Group Interviewing). The
elements of competence reflect universality and particularity, the essential goal of
art, social identity, and student’s attitude in art education. Analyzing elements based
on understanding the phenomenon of art education in school, competence’s attributes have
determined as contextuality, organic connectivity, relative hierarchy. These attributes are
visualized as a three-dimensional model.
The paper has implicated for competence research based on the in-depth
general understanding of art education. Therefore, I believe changing the vision of
value in competence and focusing on the field research can narrow the gap of
theory and practice.
