The purpose of this study is to find out the characteristics of the deviant studying culture of
juveniles with the assumption that it results from the distorted culture of main stream education. For
this reason, three questions have been raised: “What have juveniles value orientation on the goal of
school education?,” “What are learning activities of juveniles which are associated with school
education?” and “Compared with the distorted main stream culture, what is the deviant learning
culture of juveniles like?”
Main points are as follows. First, juveniles' anomic deviations could be divided into 5 types when
school education is accepted or rejected as an institutional means to achieve an academic background
and clique. Those five types include clinging learning only to prepare the entrance examination
within school or at private educational institutes, unconcern of learning, retreatism to avoid learning,
and deschooling. Next, many activities are indicated as students' learning deviations which feature the
deviant learning culture. Those activities include sleeping during class time, activities that show a
tendency to cling to the college entrance examination excessively (for example, avoiding classes
which are not concerned with the entrance examination, studying at private educational institutes, and
doing assignments for those educational institutes), doing something else in class (sending massage
through a cellular phone, chatting with classmates, and mischief-making). In addition, activities which
result from the loss of interest in class such as not preparing for class, commuting with an empty
bag, sitting spaced out could also be included. Activities concerned with refusing to go to school
such as being late for school, getting permission to leave early. leaving without permission, being
absent without reporting could indicate students' learning deviations which feature the deviant learning
culture as well.
The main conclusion is that the distorted mainstream culture which actually dominates Korean
schools misleads the educational view of students and results in deviants; Thus juveniles learning
culture has also lost its true nature and transmuted. Therefore, it is asserted in this study that
juveniles' deviant learning culture has the features of both sub-culture to distorted educational culture
and counter culture.
