In this study, I attempt to analyze the employment and social activities of the graduates from the
Jecheon public elementary school in the Japanese colonial period(1912-1921). The analysis was
focused on the selection and allocation function of the school, and before and after ongoing
disorganization of traditional social relationship.
The major findings can be summarized as follows. First, the Jecheon public elementary school
executed it's selection and allocation function in Jecheon district. And it could have an influence on
activating the need for the acquisition of social status, and entrance into the modern school. Second,
traditional social relationship, the tenant system etc, could be the restraining factor on the need for
entrance into the modern school. Third, before and after around the 3?1 movement against Japanese
colonial authorities, the traditional social relationship was disorganized, and it could be influential on
the need for entrance into the modern school.
