The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of group art therapy on psychological well-being
and self-efficacy of working mothers in terms of enhancement of quality of life. 24 women with minor
children, working at a general hospital located in S city, participated in the study and eventually the data
of 21 working mothers was used. All of them agreed to participate in the study, and 12 of them were
assigned to the Experimental Group(EG) and the rest 9 to the Control Group(CG). EG was offered the
group art therapy, with 90-minute sessions twice a week September through November 2013 (16 times in
total). CG was offered no intervention. Both EG and CG were evaluated by the Psychological Well-Being
Scale(PWBS) and Self-Efficacy Scale(SES) before and after the group art therapy intervention and 9 weeks
after the group art therapy program. And then the resulting data was analyzed by the SPSS 18.0 package
and independent sample t-test was conducted to verify the pre-homogeneity of EG and CG and paired
sample t-test was conducted to verify the effects of group art therapy.
The results of the study indicated that the psychological well-being and self-efficacy of the working
mothers were improved at a significant level. The group art therapy made the positive changes to their
psychological well-being and self-efficacy. Also, the positive changes in self-efficacy lasted. The result is
meaningful as the group art therapy intervention helped working mothers enhance the quality of their lives.
In addition, the limit of the study and some suggestions on future studies were discussed.
