의력결핍 과잉행동장애(ADHD)는 가장 흔히 진단되는 아동기 행동장애의 하나로, 미국의 경우 학령기 아동에게서 3-7%가 나타나며 이후 청소년기와 초기 성인기의 어려움과 관련이 있는 것으로 보고되고 있다. ADHD가 수반하는 주의력 결핍과 과잉행동 등의 대표적 특성 이외에도, 약물․알코올의 남용 및 높은 의존성 등을 포함하는 물질남용장애는 청소년기 및 초기성인기에 많이 나타난다. 본 연구는 넓은 의미에서의 물질남용장애가 ADHD와 높은 상관을 보인다는 최근의 관심을 정리하고자 하였다. 즉, 아동의 발달과정에서 ADHD와 물질남용간의 관계를 밝힌 연구들을 살펴보고, Sher의 생리심리사회모델과 Phil과 Peterson의 도식에 기초하여 그 연관성을 밝히고자 하였다. 그리고 이들의 연관성에 영향을 미칠 것이라고 보여지는 생물학적, 심리적, 사회적, 문화적 요인들을 검토해보았다. 이러한 결과는 ADHD와 그에 수반되는 어려움을 줄일 수 있는 예방프로그램 개발에 기여할 것으로 기대된다.
The aims of this paper were to describe the research documenting the life course relationships between ADHD and substance abuse, and the ADHD-substance abuse link from the Sher\'s Biopsychosocial perspective and Pihl and Peterson\'s proposition. In the process of explaining this link between these two variables such as ADHD and substance abuse, mediational and moderational aspects were examined like the Sher\'s model. In addition, based on this literature review and consideration of the Sher\'s biopsychosocial model, a few testable research ideas were discussed.
