The purpose of this study is to Strengthening the Social Adaption of the Dementia Aged through the Group Social Work by Art Therapy
For the dementia aged who use Day Care Center, a art, literature therapy applied an experimental design was operated and analyzed quantitatively as well as qualitatively to understand how much their cognitive and emotional ability have been improved. The purpose of this study is to find a strategy to strengthen the social adaptation of the dementia aged based on the experimental results. To achieve this purpose, the study divides research objects into an experimental group and a controlled group. The experiment group is composed of the ten dementia aged who use Day Care Center of a social welfare center in Kang buk Gu, Seoul. The controlled group is composed of the ten dementia aged who use Day Care Center of another social welfare located in Kang seo Gu, Seoul. Research outcomes show that cognitive, emotional abilities of the controlled group or even decrease while the experiment group\'s abilities have been improved remarkably. Based on This research findings show that a art, literature therapy improves the cognitive, emotional and social abilities of the dementia aged but not the physical.
With the research findings, strategies for strengthening the social adaptation of the dementia aged are suggested as follows:
(1) As a strategy for improving cognitive ability for the dementia aged, four are necessary: to enrich their basic concept of numbers and vocabulary; to develop their memory and thoughts; to cultivate their discernment, sense, and perceptibility; and to enhance their recognition
(2) As a strategy for improving emotional ability, three methods are suggested: to decrease
emotional instability, depression and enervation; to enhance their self-esteem, self-confidence, and feeling of achievement; and to inspire their ideas of participation.
In conclusion, this study discloses the fact that art, literature therapy is very helpful to strengthen social adaptation ability of the dementia aged. However, research findings have limitations to generalize to all the dementia aged. In the future, further studies on this topic may be required with more systematic and well-designed experiments and its implementation.
Finally, this study suggests several social work practice implications through the discussions above.
First, to strengthen the social adaptation ability of the dementia aged, the effects of art, literature therapy on dementia should be operated and evaluated more systematically and continuously.
Second, training art, literature therapy experts is necessary.
Third, in social welfare facilities including Day Care Centers, it is required to secure spaces and materials for operating art, literature therapy.
Fourth, it is very critical to secure finance and other necessary materials enough for an effective operation of art, literature therapy.
And finally, in order to clarify the effect of art, literature therapy for dementia aged, it is necessary to distinguish properly serious dementia patients from the light ones.
