본 연구에서는 뉴질랜드 지역에서 유학하는 조기 유학생들(초등학생 35명, 중학생 62명, 고등학생 42명)을 대상으로 그들이 학업적, 심리적으로 잘 적응하여 유학생활을 성공적으로 해나가는 데에 무엇이 중요하게 작용하는지 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 빈도와 백분율, Cronbach\'s α, 수량화 방법론 I, 질적 분석을 적용하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 조기 유학생의 학업성취도에 영향을 주는 변인은 8개의 변인군(유학생의 인구학적 배경 변인군, 가정환경 변인군, 유학 전 준비 변인군, 유학 후 진행 변인군, 유학에 대한 동기 및 가치관 변인군, 친구관계 변인군, 여가생활 변인군, 심리내적 변인군)에 해당하는 총 28개로 나타났다. 이 중에서 상대적으로 영향력이 높은 변인군은 친구관계 변인군, 유학 후 진행 변인군, 심리내적 변인군 등이었다. 둘째, 조기 유학생의 심리적 적응에 영향을 주는 변인은 8개의 변인 군에 해당하는 총 24개로 나타났다. 이 중에서 상대적으로 영향력이 높은 변인군은 심리내적 변인군, 유학 후 진행변인군, 친구관계 변인군 등이었다. 셋째, 선행된 양적 연구결과를 토대로 면접 자료를 범주화 하고 질적 분석한 결과, 추출된 유학생활 성공요인은 형제관계, 어머니와의 동거, 부모님의 자녀 교육관, 유학 이전의 외국생활 경험, 가정의 경제적 수준, 어머니의 영어수준, 영어 공부기간, 유학기간, 유학에 대한 유학생 자신의 신념, 친구관계, 무시받거나 차별받은 경험, 교육환경, 현지에서의 학습시간, 여가생활, 성격특성, 자신감, 적응력, 독립심 등이었다.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the critical factors contributing to success of studying abroad for young korean students in Newzealand(35 elementary school students, 62 junior high school students, 42 senior high school students). The data were analysed by frequencies, percentiles, Cronbach\' a coefficient, quantification methods I, qualitative research methods. The results are as follow. (1)There were 28 factors that affect a student\'s academic accomplishment. Those factors were classified into 8 factor clusters including student\'s background, family environment, preparation before coming overseas, their life while studying overseas, motivation and personal thoughts of studying overseas, relationships with friends, recreation, psychological matters. The factor clusters with greatest effect were relationships with friends, preparation before coming overseas and psychological matters. (2)There were 24 factors that affected a student\'s psychological adjustment. Within the factors, psychological matters, preparation before coming overseas and relationships with friends, again, turned out to be the most influential factors. (3)As a result of the qualitative analysis, the factors that helped students to succeed in studying overseas were as follows: sibling, iving with mother, parents thought on education, overseas experience before coming overseas, economic state of their family, mother\'s English level, period of studying. And also the student\'s belief in studying overseas, relationships with friends, experience of being neglected, amount of time studying, recreation, personality, confidence, ability to adjust and independence helped students to succeed.
