The Role of Somatostatin in Nociceptive Processing of the Spinal Cord in Anesthetized Cats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.4 1 365-373 (9 pages)
Somatostatin (SOM) is one of the major neuropeptides in dorsal root ganglion cells, but its role in spinal nociceptive process has not been well known. In present study we aimed to investigate the effect of SOM on the response of dorsal horn neurons to the various types of peripheral nociceptive stimuli in anesthetized cats. Using carbon-filament microelectrode, the single cell activities of wide dynamic range neurons were recorded from the lumbosacral enlargement after noxious mechanical... -
Calcium Modulates Excitatory Amino Acid (EAA)- and Substance P-induced Rat Dorsal Horn Cell Responses
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 11 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.1 5 35-45 (11 pages)
Excitatory amino acid (EAA) and substance P (SP) have been known to be primary candidates for nociceptive neurotransmitter in the spinal cord, and calcium ions are implicated in processing of the sensory informations mediated by EAA and SP in the spinal cord. In this study, we examined how Ca2 modified the responses of dorsal horn neurons to single or combined iontophoretical application of EAA and SP in the rat. All the LT cells tested responded to kainate, whereas about 55% of low... -

suppressed to 71⁑5% of the control. Injection of 0.7 M glutamate elevated mean arterial pressure by 25⁑5 mmHg and suppressed dEMG to 20⁑7% of the control. The suppression of dEMG were maintained for 30 minutes. Naloxone, an opioid receptor antagonist, inhibited the suppression of dEMG elicited by amygdaloid injection of glutamate from 28⁑4 to 68⁑5% of the control. Methysergide, a serotonin receptor antagonist, also inhibited the suppression of dEMG from 33⁑5... -
Effects of Dopamine and Haloperidol on Morphine-induced CREB and AP-1 DNA Binding Activities in Differentiated SH-SY5Y Human Neuroblastoma Cells
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.6 3 671-676 (6 pages)
In the present study, we first examined whether the changes in the DNA binding activities of the transcription factors, cAMP response element binding protein (CREB) and activator protein-1 (AP-1) mediate the long-term effects of morphine in differentiated SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells. The increases in CREB and AP-1 DNA binding activities were time-dependent up to 6 days of morphine treatment (1, 4, and 6 days). However, the significant reduction in the DNA binding activities of CREB and... -
Mechanism of Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide-Induced Catecholamine Secretion from the Rat Adrenal Medulla
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 12 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.4 6 443-454 (12 pages)
The present study was attempted to investigate the effect of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) on secretion of catecholamines (CA) and to establish whether there is the existence of a noncholinergic mechanism in adrenomedullary CA secretion from the isolated perfused rat adrenal gland. The perfusion into an adrenal vein of VIP (3⁓106 M) for 5 min or the injection of acetylcholine (ACh, 5.32⁓103 M) resulted in great increases in CA secretion. Tachyphylaxis to... -
Intracisternal Antidepressants Suppressed the Nociceptive Jaw Opening Reflex in Freely Moving Rats

This study was performed to investigate the mechanism of central analgesic effects of antidepressants. Thirty four male rats were anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium (40 mg/kg, ip). A stainless steel guide cannula and a PE tube (PE10) were implanted into the lateral ventricle and cisterna magna area. Stimulating and recording electrodes were implanted into the incisor pulp and anterior digastric muscle. Electrodes were led subcutaneously to the miniature cranial connector sealed on the top... -
Comparison of Somatostatin and Morphine Action on the Responses of Wide Dynamic Range Cells in the Dorsal Horn to Peripheral Noxious Mechanical and Heat Stimulation in Cats

non-specific opioid antagonist, always reversed the Mor induced suppression of neuronal activity evoked by noxious mechanical stimuli, but did not always reverse the suppression of neuronal activity elicited by SOM. The suppressive effect of Mor on thermal stimulus-evoked neuronal activity was partially reversed by naloxone, while that of SOM were not reversed at all. The above results suggest that both Mor and SOM exert an inhibitory effect on thermal and mechanical stimulus-evoked WDR neuronal... -

The effects of crude saponin (SAP) and alkaloid (ALK) fractions of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer on the detrimental effects of electroconvulsive shock (ECS) and scopolamine on passive avoidance response (PAR) were studied in male Sprague-Dawley rats, referring their effects on the neuronal injury and plasticity of hippocampus in response to electrolytic lesion of left entorhinal cortex (ECL). The detrimental ECS effect on PAR was attenuated by pre- and post-treatments with SAP and ALK, respectively,... -
Effects of Electrical Stimulation of Brainstem Nuclei on Dorsal Horn Neuron Responses to Mechanical Stimuli in a Rat Model of Neuropathic Pain

The aim of the present study is to examine the brainstem sites where the electrical stimulation produces a suppression of dorsal horn neuron responses of neuropathic rats. An experimental neuropathy was induced by a unilateral ligation of L5-L6 spinal nerves of rats. Ten to 15 days after surgery, the spinal cord was exposed and single-unit recording was made on wide dynamic range (WDR) neurons in the dorsal horn. Neuronal responses to mechanical stimuli applied to somatic receptive fields were... -

We studied the effects of ginseng protopanaxadiol (PD) and protopanaxatriol (PT) saponins on the analgesia using several pain tests such as writhing, formalin, and tail-flick test. Using mouse, pretreatment of PD or PT saponins (i.p.) induced inhibition of abdominal constrictions caused by 0.9% acetic acid administration(i.p.). The AD50 was around 27 (17-43) mg/kg for PD and 13.5 (3-61) mg/kg for PT saponins in writhing test. Both PD and PT saponins also showed the inhibition of bitings and...
