of jaw opening reflex produced by a noxious electrical stimulation in the dental pulp and by measuring the latency to withdraw the tail from a heat ray. Restraint showed an antinociceptive response. A significant increase in pain threshold on bleeding was shown and the increase was larger in male group than in female group. The tail flick latency (TFL) on bleeding after AVP antagonist injection into the ventricle was decreased and the decrease was greater in male rats than in female rats.... -
Role of K+ Channels to Resting Membrane Potential of Rabbit Middle Cerebral Arterial Smooth Muscle Cells
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.6 2 547-554 (8 pages)
The aim of the present study is to investigate the contribution of Ca2-activated K (KCa) channels and delayed rectifier K (KV) channels to the resting membrane potential (RMP) in rabbit middle cerebral arterial smooth muscle cells. The RMP and membrane currents were recorded using the whole-cell patch configuration and single KCa channel was recorded using the outside-out patch configuration. Using the pipette solution containing 0.05 mM EGTA, the RMP was... -
Effect of Ethanol on Na+-Pi Uptake in Opossum Kidney Cells Role of Membrane Fluidization and Reactive Oxygen Species
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 10 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.5 10 529-538 (10 pages)
This study was undertaken to examine the effect of ethanol on Na-dependent phosphate (Na-Pi) uptake in opossum kidney (OK) cells, an established renal proximal tubular cell line. Ethanol inhibited Na-dependent component of phosphate uptake in a dose-dependent manner with I50 of 8.4%, but it did not affect Na-independent component. Similarly, ethanol inhibited Na-dependent uptakes of glucose and amino acids (AIB, glycine, alanine, and leucine). Microsomal... -
Temporal Changes in Neuronal Activity of the Bilateral Medial Vestibular Nuclei Following Unilateral Labyrinthectomy in Rats

6 or 24 hr post-op and then increased with time. The rate of decrease in gain was more prominent in ipsilateral type I and contralateral type II neurons immediately after ULX. Although the gain of those neurons increased gradually after 24 hours, it remained below normal levels. The phase was significantly advanced in all neurons following ULX. These results suggest that a depression of activities in ipsilateral type I and contralateral type II neurons is closely related with the occurrence of... -
Effects of Cl Channel Blockers on the Cardiac ATP-sensitive K+ Channel
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.3 8 305-313 (9 pages)
To explore whether Cl channel blockers interact with the ATP-sensitive K (KATP) channel, I have examined the effect of two common Cl channel blockers on the KATP channel activity in isolated rat ventricular myocytes using patch clamp techniques. In inside-out patches, 4,4'-diisothio-cyanatostilbene- 2,2'-disulfonic acid (DIDS) and niflumic acid applied to bath solution inhibited the KATP channel activity in a concentration-dependent manner with IC50 of 0.24 and 927μM,... -
Effects of Ethanol on Na+-dependent Solute Uptake in Rabbit Renal Brush-Border Membrane Vesicles
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.2 9 191-198 (8 pages)
This study was undertaken to examine the effect of ethanol on Na-dependent transport systems (glucose, phosphate, and dicarboxylate) in renal brush-border membrane vesicles (BBMV). Ethanol inhibited Na- dependent uptakes of glucose, phosphate, and succinate in a dose-dependent manner, but not the uptakes of Na-independent. The H/TEA antiport was reduced by 8% ethanol. Kinetic analysis showed that ethanol caused a decrease in Vmax of three transport systems, leaving... -
The Effects of Sera from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Patients on Neuromuscular Transmission and Calcium Channels in Mice
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 17 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.1 13 101-117 (17 pages)
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a degenerative neuromuscular disease of unknown etiology in which the upper and lower motor neurons are progressively destroyed. Recent evidences support the role of autoimmune mechanisms in the pathogenesis of ALS. This study investigated the effects of sera from ALS patients on neuromuscular transmission in phrenic nerve-hemidiaphragm preparations and on calcium currents of single isolated dorsal root ganglion (DRG) cells in mice. Mice were injected with... -
Modulation of ATP-Induced Activation of the Muscarinic K+ Channel Activity by Protein Kinase C
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 11 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.6 11 743-753 (11 pages)
The atrial acetylcholine-activated K (KACh) channel is gated by the pertussis toxin-sensitive inhibitory G (GK) protein. Earlier studies revealed that ATP alone can activate the KACh channel via transphosphorylation mediated by nucleoside-diphosphate kinase (NDPK) in atrial cells of rabbit and guinea pig. This channel can be activated by various agonists and also modulated its function by phosphorylation. ATP-induced KACh channel activation (AIKA) was maintained in the presence of the... -
Increased Activity of Large Conductance Ca2+-Activated K+ Channels in Negatively-Charged Lipid Membranes
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 11 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.4 15 529-539 (11 pages)
The effects of membrane surface charge originated from lipid head groups on ion channels were tested by analyzing the activity of single large conductance Ca2-activated K (maxi K) channel from rat skeletal muscle. The conductances and open-state probability (Po) of single maxi K channels were compared in three types of planar lipid bilayers formed from a neutral phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) or two negatively-charged phospholipids, phosphatidylserine (PS) and phosphatidylinositol... -
Effect of K+-channel Blockers on the Muscarinic- and A1-adenosine- Receptor Coupled Regulation of Electrically Evoked Acetylcholine Release in the Rat Hippocampus

a dose-dependent manner, without affecting the basal rate of release. 4-aminopyridine (4AP), a specific A-type K+-channel blocker (1∼100 ՌM), increased the evoked ACh release in a dose-related fashion, and the basal rate of release is increased by 3 and 100 ՌM. Tetraethylammonium (TEA), a non-specific K+-channel blocker (0.1∼10 mM), increased the evoked ACh release in a dose-dependent manner without affecting the basal release. The effects of Oxo and CPA were not affected...
