Teachers’ Perceptions about the Use of Background Music in Preschool Free Play Time
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 22 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2017, Vol.11 No.2 5 85-106 (22 pages)
early childhood curriculum provides opportunities for child-centred learning and gives children a chance to explore safely the world around them. However, previous literature suggests that the beneficial use background music during free-play time is contested and that further research would be useful. A specially designed survey was sent to teachers in Seoul, Kyoung-gi, and Choong-chung provinces in South Korea by e-mail and supplemented post-survey by n=12 in-depth interviews. Data from n=127... -
The Continuing Influence of Froebel’s Kindergarten System in Current Early Childhood Education in the USA and South Korea
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 16 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.3 6 125-140 (16 pages)
We (1) describe the origin of the kindergarten system invented by Froebel, (2) explain how Froebel’s kindergarten system has influenced the kindergarten system in the USA and South Korea, and (3) offer conclusive statements and implications about the application of Froebel’s original thoughts on the kindergarten system in both countries. Four objectives of this paper are: (1) to understand the original ideas of the kindergarten system invented by Froebel, (2) to review how Froebel’s... -
Young Chinese-Australian Children’s Use of Technology at Home: Parents’ and Grandparents’ Views
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 20 Pages

planes of analysis. We found that these children lived in technology-rich environments, however strongly held values and beliefs associated with academic learning resulted in the creation of family rules and practices that limited children’s access to, and use of, different technologies. We argue that an understanding of family values, beliefs, practices and culture will assist educators to build partnerships effectively with families, and enhance learning opportunities for young children. -

Mathematics using multiple senses: Developing finger gnosis with three- and four-year-olds in an era of multi-touch technologies
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 11 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2015, Vol.9 No.3 7 99-110 (11 pages)
In this paper, we explore a richer sense of finger gnosis (finger knowledge) with respect to three- and four-year-olds’ interactions with a novel iPad application (TouchCounts), focusing on their responses to an “inverse subitising” task. The direct and tactile nature of their engagement with TouchCounts leads to a striking shift from incrementing using the index finger to deployment of several fingers all-at-once (in a cardinal touch gesture) to achieve a given target number that is then... -
Using drawings and discussion to gain insights into young learners’ understanding of mass
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 14 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2015, Vol.9 No.3 6 85-98 (14 pages)
interview as ways to gain insights into children’s learning of mathematics,. Ten children in their first or second year of school recorded their understanding using drawing and/or writing after the period in which they were taught lessons on the measurement of mass. Later they met individually with an interviewer/researcher to discuss their drawing/writing and their learning. The Impress Me recording was found to be a useful prompt for the children to stimulate discussion about their learning. -
The role of units in the concept of length for four- to six-year-old children
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 17 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2015, Vol.9 No.3 5 67-83 (17 pages)
The understanding of the unit is a key point in the development of the concept of length. The understanding of unit is necessary for measuring as well as for comparing indirectly by using unit iteration. This article describes a study that investigated the use of units by children when they were comparing lines indirectly. The correlations between different aspects of the use of units are examined: the understanding of units, the use of units for decomposing and for counting are investigated. -
