Introducing Filipino Games To Promote Peer Play Interaction
Thelma Rabago-Mingoa, Therese Angeline M. Estacio, Joanna Erika M. Perlas 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 21 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 9 153-173 (21 pages)
Long ago, Filipino games have been part of the Filipino pastime. These games, being cooperative by nature, seem to promote close social relationships in the family, in school and in the community. But nowadays, Filipino children rarely play these games. The present generation has been exposed to a variety of games in handheld technological devices that could lead to less interest in playing Filipino games, or other social play. This action research aimed to find out how teaching Filipino games... -
Emotions of expatriate children and families transitioning into Malaysia: A cultural historical perspective
Megan Adams 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 23 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 8 129-151 (23 pages)
Much of the literature on Third Culture Kids (TCKs) is focussed on negative emotions that children and adults experience during an international transition. Few studies were found that draw on a cultural historical reading of emotions during an international transition. This paper seeks to fill the gap by presenting a study of a young child and her family transitioning into Malaysia as expatriates and looks at the individual and collective emotions present at home and school during the... -
“Raising a Socially Competent Child”: Unpacking the Concept of Social Competence
Eunae Son 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 22 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 6 93-114 (22 pages)
This paper investigates how social competence, as a discourse, has been constructed in the field of early childhood education (hereafter ‘the field’) and how the conceptualization of social competence in academia has been applied to educational practices. Based on Bruner’s (1996) notions of folk psychology and folk pedagogy and Foucault’s notion of discourse (Foucault, 1972), I identify the cultural values and beliefs in the dominant discourses about raising “a socially competent child”,... -

responded to a learning environment where they could influence how and what they learned. Using ethnographic data from the much larger Agency and Young Children project in the United States, this article describes how a particular six year old classroom serving mostly children of Latino immigrants responded in ways that not only increased content knowledge in subjects such as science and literacy but also increased the amount of shared or communal agency in the classroom, even affecting the... -
Guest Editor’s INTRODUCTION
Joseph Tobin 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 4 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 1 1-4 (4 pages)
There are several reasons for our choice of the topic of “pedagogies of social emotional development” as the theme for this guest-edited issue of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Research in Early Childhood Education. From its beginnings, early childhood education emphasized children’s social emotional development. This was true both for the nursery and play schools attended by children of the wealthy and the settlement house preschool programs intended to give children of immigrants and the poor... -

환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.1 2 19-35 (17 pages)
There has been an increase in research activities in multicultural early childhood education in New Zealand. This article provides a critical review of these activities. This is an attempt to unravel the aspirations and complexities associated with the educational policies and practices with children of culturally diverse backgrounds. The conclusion from this literature review is that despite the multicultural principles that support democracy and equitability in education in New Zealand, a... -

The main purposes of this research were to investigate factors for the development of basic Dharma traits (BDT) in preschool children and to promote the BDT which is one of a number of identified topics concerning ethics and morality targeted for urgent presentation to children and youth in Thailand. The study was conducted in two phases using kindergarten students aged 5 and 6. In Phase 1, teachers evaluated the BDT in 1,088 preschool children throughout Thailand using cluster sampling. The... -

engaged in traditional, instructional practice. In L2 Singapore classrooms, traditional Chinese literacy pedagogies were tempered by more Western ideas. The common difficulties encountered in L1 literacy classrooms were different from those found in L2 classrooms, and most of the L1 and L2 difficulties were associated with the language and education policies. The sociocontextual, psycholinguistic and pedagogical accounts and the educational implications of these findings are also discussed. -

reactions to technology reported on here apply widely across disciplines and curricular areas in early childhood. We focus first on current research related to the role of technology in preschool children’s early language and literacy instruction and then discuss what we believe is critically important to address by any preschool or other level of educational institution in order to redress serious shortcomings in the role of technology in the classroom education of today’s young children. -
