Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 20 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2015, Vol.9 No.2 3 51-70 (20 pages)
Volunteering to help is a traditional type of parental involvement in early childhood education. There have been concerns over the justification of teachers’ practice of leaving their work with parents, particularly for routine tasks such as washing and cleaning, however, little research has been conducted to scrutinize the practice and examine parents’ experiences with volunteering to help. Based on a sample of 25 parents from New Zealand public kindergartens, this study investigates parents... -

about their perspectives on child-rearing and preschool involvement. The teachers of their children were also interviewed regarding the nature of the fathers’ participation. The results suggest that activities which involved the whole family are preferred over those which required parental participation only. Younger fathers (those in their mid-thirties) and working in the same university and whose children are between 0-2 years old were more likely to be participative in school activities. -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.1 2 19-35 (17 pages)
There has been an increase in research activities in multicultural early childhood education in New Zealand. This article provides a critical review of these activities. This is an attempt to unravel the aspirations and complexities associated with the educational policies and practices with children of culturally diverse backgrounds. The conclusion from this literature review is that despite the multicultural principles that support democracy and equitability in education in New Zealand, a... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 33 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2013, Vol.7 No.3 4 69-101 (33 pages)
This study examined how pre- and post-service early childhood teachers’ beliefs and responses to bullying among young children differ by level of qualification, type of bullying and whether or not it was witnessed. Results showed 1st and 4th-year student- and diploma-qualified teachers perceived acts of physical bullying to be more serious than verbal or relational bullying to a greater extent than did degree-qualified teachers. Degree-qualified teachers were less susceptible to bullying type... -

Taiwanese Mothers as Their Child’s First English Teacher: Issues and Challenges
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 18 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2013, Vol.7 No.3 1 1-18 (18 pages)
In Taiwan, current policy encourages parents to participate fully in their children’s education and to regard themselves as their children’s first teacher. There is, however, little data about whether mothers do indeed perceive themselves as a “teacher” of English language and literacy to their pre-school-aged children in home contexts. Nor is it clear how they enact this role and responsibility during everyday interactions with their children. This study investigated Taiwanese mothers’... -

adopting voices for characters, adding the reader’s interpretation or asking questions of the listener, adapting the story by changing parts of sentences, and reading some parts of the picture book, while omitting others. The course benefited the mothers’ story-sharing skills and their parental efficacy beliefs. Korean language teaching materials and their use are discussed, along with implications for governmental inclusion policies for people whose backgrounds are not in Korean culture. -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 20 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2012, Vol.6 No.1 1 1-20 (20 pages)
There is a global tendency towards evidence-based practice in education, meaning that practice is molded by research that prescribes “what works” to achieve predefined outcomes. This may present serious pitfalls. Considering that early childhood education in all affluent regions and beyond has to deal with social and cultural diversity, professionals will have to work in contexts of unpredictability and complexity. In this manuscript we develop the central pedagogical questions regarding... -

as a foreign language (EFL) instruction to children during the early childhood period are subject to much debate. Official government policies may not always reflect actual parental practices. Little is known about the extent to which explicit EFL teaching by mothers occurs in the home context. This study investigated whether Taiwanese mothers of 3 to 6 year old children were teaching EFL to their children at home and the characteristics associated with this practice. A sample of 466 mothers of...
