BeomJunLee, KyungSunKang, SangYoonNam, JaeHakPark, YongSoonLee, YoungWonYun, MyungHaingCho 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 11 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.3 3 251-261 (11 pages)
The effects of carnosine and related compounds (CRCs) including anserine, homocarnosine, histidine, and β-alanine on monosaccharide autoxidation and H2O2 formation were investigated. The incubation of CRCs with D-glucose, D-glucosamine, and D, L-glyceraldehyde at 37oC increased the absorption maxima at 285 nm, 273 nm, and 290∼330 nm, respectively. D, L-glyceraldehyde was the most reactive sugar with CRCs. The presence of copper strongly stimulated the reaction of carnosine and anserine with... -
Thyroid Hormone-Induced Alterations of Ca2+-ATPase and Phospholamban Protein Expression in Cardiac Sarcoplasmic Reticulum

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.2 13 223-230 (8 pages)
changes have been suggested to include alterations in the expression and/or activity levels of various proteins; α-myosin heavy chain, β- myosin heavy chain, β-receptors, the guanine nucleotide-binding regulatory protein, and the sarcolemmal Ca2-ATPase. All these cellular alterations may be associated with changes in the intracellular Ca2 concentration. The most important regulator of intracellular Ca2 concentration is the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), which serves as a... -
Increase of Intracellular Ca2+ Concentration by Vibrio Vulnificus Cytolysin in Rat Platelets; Triggering Mechanism of Platelet Cytolysis

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.2 10 199-205 (7 pages)
Vibrio vulnificus cytolysin caused platelet cytolysis and increased intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2]]i) of rat platelets in a concentration-dependent manner. In the presence of V. vulnificus cytolysin (3 HU/ml), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity was increased from 1.3⁑0.4% of control to 64.3⁑3.4% in platelet suspension buffer. In Ca2-free platelet suspension buffer, however, V. vulnificus cytolysin did not induce [Ca2]i increase and LDH release.... -
Effects of Ethanol on Na+-dependent Solute Uptake in Rabbit Renal Brush-Border Membrane Vesicles

Kinetic analysis showed that ethanol caused a decrease in Vmax of three transport systems, leaving Km values unchanged. Ethanol decreased phlorizin binding, which was closely correlated with the decrease in Vmax of Na-glucose uptake. These results indicate that ethanol inhibits Na-dependent uptakes of glucose, phosphate, and dicaboxylate and that the reduction in Vmax of Na-glucose uptake is caused by a decrease in the number of active carrier proteins in the membrane. -
Role of Phospholipase A2 in Hypoxia-Induced Renal Cell Injury

The present study was designed to assess the roles of PLA2 activation and arachidonic acid (AA) metabolites in hypoxia-induced renal cell injury. Hypoxia increased LDH release in a dose-dependent manner in rabbit renal cortical slices, and this increase was significant after 20-min hypoxia. The hypoxia-induced LDH release was prevented by amino acids, glycine and alanine, and extracellular acidosis (pH 6.0). Buffering intracellular Ca2 by a chelator, but not omission of Ca2 in the... -
The Roles of Arachidonic Acid and Calcium in the Angiotensin II-induced Inhibition of Na+ Uptake in Renal Proximal Tubule Cells

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.1 11 83-91 (9 pages)
Angiotensin II (ANG II) has a biphasic effect on Na transport in proximal tubule: low doses of ANG II increase the Na transport, whereas high doses of ANG II inhibit it. However, the mechanisms of high dose ANG II-induced inhibition on Na uptake are poorly understood. Thus the aim of the present study was to investigate signal transduction pathways involved in the ANG II-induced inhibition of Na uptake in the primary cultured rabbit renal proximal tubule cells (PTCs)... -
Systemic Injection of Lidocaine Induce Expression of c-fos mRNA and Protein in Adult Rat Brain

Both direct and indirect environmental stress to brain were increase the expression of transcription factor c-fos in various populations of neurons. In this study, we examined whether the intraperitoneal injections of lidocaine at doses inducing convulsion within 10 min increased the level of c-fos mRNA and protein in forebrain areas. In situ hybridization using [35S]UTP-labeled antisense c-fos, cRNA increased c-fos mRNA levels though hippocampal formation, piriform cortex, septum,... -
Regulation of Magnesium Release by cAMP during Chemical Hypoxia in the Rat Heart and Isolated Ventricular Myocytes

Chemically induced hypoxia has been shown to induce a depletion of ATP. Since intracellular free Mg2 ([Mg2]i) appears to be tightly regulated following cellular energy depletion, we hypothesized that the increase in [Mg2]i would result in Mg2 extrusion following hormonal stimulation. To determine the relation between Mg2 efflux and cellular energy state in a hypoxic rat heart and isolated myocytes, [Mg2]i, ATP and Mg2 content were measured by... -

SHR and age-marched Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY). Choline acetyltransferase activity was far greater in RVLM of SHR than that of WKY. [3H]ACh release from RVLM was also greater in SHR than in WKY. Acetylcholinesterase activity and [3H]NMS binding of RVLM slice of SHR were not significantly different from that of WKY. These results suggest that the enhanced cholinergic mechanisms in the RVLM of SHR is due to the enhanced presynaptic cholinergic tone rather than the altered postsynaptic mechanisms. -
Role of Protein Kinases on NF-κB Activation and Cell Death in Bovine Cerebral Endothelial Cells

Nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) activation is modulated by various protein kinases. Activation of NF-κB is known to be important in the regulation of cell viability. The present study investigated the effect of inhibitors of protein tyrosine kinase (PTK), protein kinase C (PKC) and protein kinase A (PKA) on NF-κB activity and the viability of bovine cerebral endothelial cells (BCECs). In serum-deprivation-induced BCEC death, low doses of TNFα showed a protective effect. TNFα induced NF-κB...
