Inhibitory Effects of Corni Fructus Extract on Angiogenesis and Adipogenesis
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 10 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2011, Vol.15 No.1 7 43-52 (10 pages)
Natural products in Chonnam, Korea were screened via anti-angiogenesis experiments, and 1 candidate product was identified, Corni fructus, which exerted dose-dependent inhibitory effects against angiogenesis, adipogenesis, and cell adhesion. C. fructus extract (CFE) exhibits an angiogenesis inhibi</I>tory effect superior to that of the EGCG from green tea leaves. The expression level of angiogenesis and adipogenesis-related signal molecules in the western blotting was reduced by increasing... -
Curcumin Induces Downregulation of E2F4 Expression and Apoptotic Cell Death in HCT116 Human Colon Cancer Cells; Involvement of Reactive Oxygen Species

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2010, Vol.14 No.6 7 391-397 (7 pages)
pretreatment of cells with NAC and E2F4 overexpression which is induced by doxycycline. In addition, E2F4 overexpression was observed to partially ameliorate curcumin-induced growth inhibition by cell viability assay. Taken together, we found curcumin-induced ROS down-regulation of E2F4 expression and modulation of E2F4 target genes which finally lead to the apoptotic cell death in HCT116 colon cancer cells, suggesting that E2F4 appears to be a novel determinant of curcumin-induced cytotoxicity. -
P2X and P2Y Receptors Mediate Contraction Induced by Electrical Field Stimulation in Feline Esophageal Smooth Muscle
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2010, Vol.14 No.5 10 311-316 (6 pages)
It is well-known that electrical field stimulation (EFS)-induced contraction is mediated by a cholinergic mechanism and other neurotransmitters. NO, ATP, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), and substance P are released by EFS. To investigate the purinergic mechanism involved in the EFS-induced contraction, purinegic receptors antagonists were used. Suramine, a non-selective P2 receptor antagonist, reduced the contraction induced by EFS. NF023 (10−7∼10−4 M), a selective P2X... -
Accurate Representation of Light-intensity Information by the Neural Activities of Independently Firing Retinal Ganglion Cells
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2009, Vol.13 No.3 13 221-227 (7 pages)
For successful restoration of visual function by a visual neural prosthesis such as retinal implant, electrical stimulation should evoke neural responses so that the information on visual input is properly represented. A stimulation strategy, which means a method for generating stimulation waveforms based on visual input, should be developed for this purpose. We proposed to use the decoding of visual input from retinal ganglion cell (RGC) responses for the evaluation of stimulus encoding... -
Melatonin Induces Akt Phosphorylation through Melatonin Receptor- and PI3K-Dependent Pathways in Primary Astrocytes
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2008, Vol.12 No.2 1 37-42 (6 pages)
Melatonin has been reported to protect neurons from a variety of neurotoxicity. However, the underlying mechanism by which melatonin exerts its neuroprotective property has not yet been clearly understood. We previously demonstrated that melatonin protected kainic acid-induced neuronal cell death in mouse hippocampus, accompanied by sustained activation of Akt, a critical mediator of neuronal survival. To further elucidate the neuroprotective action of melatonin, we examined in the present study... -
Preventive Effect of Serotonergic Drugs on LPS-Induced Acute Anorexia in Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.3 3 149-154 (6 pages)
The aim of the present study was to determine whether serotonergic drugs could reverse lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced anorexia in rats. LPS (500μg/kg body weight) and all serotonergic drugs, except for 8-OH-DPAT (subcutaneous), were injected intraperitoneally into Sprague-Dawley rats. Without the LPS injection, 8-OH-DPAT (1A agonist), metergoline (1/2 antagonist), and mianserin (2A/2C antagonist) exerted no effects on food intake at any of the doses tested, but ketanserin (2A antagonist)... -
Effect of Fluoxetine on the Induction of Long-term Potentiation in Rat Frontal Cortex

Serotonin (5-hydroxytroptamine, 5-HT) has been shown to affect the induction of long-term potentiation (LTP) in the cortex such as the hippocampus, the visual cortex and the prefrontal cortex. Fluoxetine, as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, is used in the management of a wide variety of psychological diseases. To study the effect of fluoxetine on the induction of LTP, we recorded the field potential in layer II/III of the frontal cortex from 3-wk-old. LTP was induced in horizontal input... -
Muscarine M2 Receptor-mediated Presynaptic Inhibition of GABAergic Transmission in Rat Meynert Neurons
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.2 1 63-70 (8 pages)
Cholinergic modulation of GABAergic spontaneous miniature inhibitory postsynaptic currents (mIPSCs) by the activation of muscarine receptors was investigated in mechanically dissociated rat nucleus basalis of the Meynert neurons using the conventional whole-cell patch recording configuration. Muscarine (10μM) reversibly and concentration-dependently decreased mIPSC frequency without affecting the current amplitude distribution. Muscarine action on GABAergic mIPSCs was completely blocked by 1μM... -

up to 60 min of experimental period. Simulta neous CSs of 200 Hz to RFC and RFO did not significantly altered afferent sensory transmission to SI cortex neurons. The profiles of CS-induced modulation of afferent sensory transmission were significantly different between two CS conditions. Thus, this study suggests that activity-dependent modulation of afferent transmission from a RF center to the SI cortex may be significantly altered when remote body part was simultaneously activated. -
Electroencephalographic Effects of Chlorpromazine in Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.3 2 245-250 (6 pages)
The effects of an antipsychotic, chlorpromazine, on the electroencephalogram (EEG) were observed while rats were awake but immobile. The time course and the dose-dependency of the EEG changes were examined. The method of the power spectrum analysis was used to examine the EEG changes by the drug. The bands were divided into delta (1∼3.5 Hz), theta (3.5∼8 Hz), alpha (8∼13 Hz), beta1 (13∼21 Hz), beta2 (21∼30 Hz) and gamma (30∼50 Hz). In rats, the low dose of chlropromazine (1 mg/kg, i.p.)...
