Pitch based carbon fibers for automotive body and electrodes
Kap Seung Yang, Bo-Hye Kim, Seong-Ho Yoon 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 9 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.3 2 162-170 (9 pages)
Pitch is an attractive raw material for carbon fiber precursors due to its low cost stemming from its availability as a residue of coking and petroleum processes. Ford Motor Company reported a carbon fiber target price of $11.0/kg by using a fast cycle-time manufacturing method with carbon fiber in an inexpensive format, allowing for an average retail price of gasoline of $3.58/gallon. They also recommended the use of carbon fiber with strength of 1700 MPa, modulus of 170 GPa, and 1.5%... -

and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy; to determine the gel fraction, degree of swelling, gel strength, kinetics-of-swelling analyses and removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from the aqueous solution. X-ray diffraction results confirmed that EBI played a significantly important role in reducing GO to graphene. The adsorption equilibrium of Cr(VI) was reached within 80 min and the adsorption capacity was dramatically increased as the acidity of the initial solution was decreased from pH... -
Study on lowering the percolation threshold of carbon nanotube-filled conductive polypropylene composites
Seung Bin Park, Moo Sung Lee, Min Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.2 8 117-124 (8 pages)
and compression molding. The percolation threshold (Φc) of the MWCNT-PP composites was most successfully lowered using the mechanofusion process than with any other mixing method (2-5 wt%). The mechanofusion process was found to enhance formation of a percolation network structure, and to ensure a more uniform state of dispersion in the CPCs. The immiscible-polymer blends were prepared by melt mixing (internal mixer) poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF, PP/PVDF, volume ratio 1:1) filled with MWCNT. -
Superhydrophobic carbon-based materials: a review of synthesis, structure, and applications
Long-Yue Meng, Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 16 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.2 5 89-104 (16 pages)
Materials with appropriate surface roughness and low surface energy can form superhydrophobic surfaces, displaying water contact angles greater than 150°. Superhydrophobic carbon-based materials are particularly interesting due to their exceptional physicochemical properties. This review discusses the various techniques used to produce superhydrophobic carbon-based materials such as carbon fibers, carbon nanotubes, graphene, amorphous carbons, etc. Recent advances in emerging fields such as... -
Double-walled carbon nanotubes: synthesis, structural characterization, and application
Yoong Ahm Kim, Kap-Seung Yang, Hiroyuki Muramatsu, Takuya Hayashi, Morinobu Endo, Mauricio Terrones, Mildred S. Dresselhaus 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 12 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.2 4 77-88 (12 pages)
Double walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) are considered an ideal model for studying the coupling interactions between different concentric shells in multi-walled CNTs. Due to their intrinsic coaxial structures they are mechanically, thermally, and structurally more stable than single walled CNTs. Geometrically, owing to the buffer-like function of the outer tubes in DWCNTs, the inner tubes exhibit exciting transport and optical properties that lend them promise in the fabrication of field-effect... -
Effect of chemically reduced graphene oxide on epoxy nanocomposites for flexural behaviors
Seul-Yi Lee, Mi-Hwa Chong, Mira Park, Hak-Yong Kim, Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 4 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.1 9 67-70 (4 pages)
In this work, nanocomposites of epoxy resin and chemically reduced graphene oxide (RGO) were prepared by thermal curing process. X-ray diffractions confirmed the microstructural properties of RGO. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to evaluate the curing behaviors of RGO/epoxy nanocomposites with different RGO loading amounts. We investigated the effect of RGO loading amounts on the mechanical properties of the epoxy nanocomposites. It was found that the presence of RGO improved both... -
Preparation and characterization of microporous NaOH activated carbons from hydrofluoric acid leached rice husk and its application for lead(II) adsorption
A. F. Hassan, A. M. Youssef 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 10 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.1 8 57-66 (10 pages)
a size fraction of 0.3-0.5 mm was selected for carbonization in the absence of air at 600°C. The carbonization product (LC) was mixed with NaOH at ratios of 1:2, 1:3, and 1:4 (wt of LC: wt of NaOH) and the produced ACs after activation at 800°C were designated NLC21, NLC31, and NLC41, respectively. Surface and textural properties were determined using nitrogen adsorption at -196°C, scanning electron microscopy images, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectra . These... -
Water and oxygen permeation through transparent ethylene vinyl alcohol/(graphene oxide) membranes
Hye Min Kim, Heon Sang Lee 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 7 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.1 7 50-56 (7 pages)
We prepared ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH)/graphene oxide (GO) membranes by solution casting method. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that GOs were fully exfoliated in the EVOH/GO membrane. The glass transition temperatures of EVOH were increased by adding GOs into EVOH. The melting temperatures of EVOH/GO composites were decreased by adding GOs into EVOH, indicating that GOs may inhibit the crystallization of EVOH during non-isothermal crystallization. However, the equilibrium melting... -
Mechanical and thermal properties of MWCNT-reinforced epoxy nanocomposites by vacuum assisted resin transfer molding
Si-Eun Lee, Seho Cho, Young-Seak Lee 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.1 4 32-37 (6 pages)
Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/epoxy composites are prepared by a vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) method. The mechanical properties, fracture surface morphologies, and thermal stabilities of these nanocomposites are evaluated for epoxy resins with various amounts of MWCNTs. Composites consisting of different amounts of MWCNTs displayed an increase of the work of adhesion between the MWCNTs and the matrix, which improved both the tensile and impact strengths of the... -
Hierarchical porous carbon nanofibers via electrospinning
Aikifa Raza, Jiaqi Wang, Shan Yang, Yang Si, Bin Ding 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 14 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.1 1 1-14 (14 pages)
Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with diameters in the submicron and nanometer range exhibit high specific surface area, hierarchically porous structure, flexibility, and super strength which allow them to be used in the electrode materials of energy storage devices, and as hybrid-type filler in carbon fiber reinforced plastics and bone tissue scaffold. Unlike catalytic synthesis and other methods, electrospinning of various polymeric precursors followed by stabilization and carbonization has become a...
