Frequency-force relationships (FFR) were studied in electrically field stimulated rat left atria (LA) by reducing the stimulation frequency from resting 3 Hz to test frequencies (0.1-1 Hz) for 5 minutes. We carried out a series of experiment demonstrating the role of mitochondria in the cytosolic and mitochondrial Ca2＋ transients and compared the results with those from computer simulation. The causal relationship between heat shock protein (HSP) and second window of cardioprotective effect is still undetermined.
