Activated carbons prepared from mixtures of coal tar pitch and petroleum pitch and their electrochemical performance as electrode materials for electric double-layer capacitor
Eunji Lee, Soon Hyung Kwon, Poo Reum Choi, Ji Chul Jung, Myung-Soo Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.2 2 78-85 (8 pages)
Activated carbons (ACs) were prepared by activation of coal tar pitch (CTP) in the range of 700°C-1000°C for 1-4 h using potassium hydroxide (KOH) powder as the activation agent. The optimal activation conditions were determined to be a CTP/KOH ratio of 1:4, activation temperature of 900°C, and activation time of 3 h. The obtained ACs showed increased pore size distribution in the range of 1 to 2 nm and the highest specific capacitance of 122 F/g in a two-electrode system with an organic... -
Preparation and thermal properties of polyethylene-based carbonized fibers
Kwan-Woo Kim, Hye-min Lee, Byoung Suhk Kim, Seon-Hwan Hwang, Lee-Ku Kwac, Kay-Hyeok An and Byung-Joo Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.1 10 62-66 (5 pages)
were studied using thermal analyses such as DSC and TGA. The melting and heating enthalpy of the fibers decreased as the cross-linking temperature increased. The cross-linked fibers had a carbonization yield of over 50%. From SEM results the highest yield of carbonized LDPE-based fibers was obtained by cross-linking at a sulfate temperature (170oC). As a result, carbonation yield of the carbonized fibers was found to depend on the functions of the cross-linking ratio of the LDPE precursors. -
Influence of hot-pressing pressure on the densification of short-carbon-fiber-reinforced, randomly oriented carbon/carbon composite
Thakur Sudesh Kumar Raunija and Sharad Chandra Sharma 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 9 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.1 4 25-33 (9 pages)
The prime objective of this research was to study the influence of hot-pressing pressure and matrix-to-reinforcement ratio on the densification of short-carbon-fiber-reinforced, randomly oriented carbon/carbon-composite. Secondary objectives included determination of the physical and mechanical properties of the resulting composite. The ‘hybrid carbon-fiberreinforced mesophase-pitch-derived carbon-matrix’ composite was fabricated by hot pressing. During hot pressing, pressure was varied from 5... -
An overview of new oxidation methods for polyacrylonitrile?based carbon fibers
Hye Kyoung Shin, Mira Park, Hak-Yong Kim and Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.1 2 11-18 (8 pages)
The process of oxidizing polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers converts them into an infusible and non-flammable state prior to carbonization. This represents one of the most important stages in determining the mechanical properties of the final carbon fibers, but the most commonly used methods, such as thermal treatment (200°C to 300°C), tend to waste a great deal of process time, money, and energy. There is therefore a need to develop more advanced oxidation methods for PAN precursor... -
Carbon nanotubes synthesis using diffusion and premixed flame methods: a review
Garima Mittal, Vivek Dhand, Kyong Yop Rhee, Hyeon-Ju Kim and Dong Ho Jung 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 10 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.1 1 1-10 (10 pages)
scalable, cost-effective, rapid and continuous process, where flame provides the necessary chemical species for the nucleation of carbon structures (feed stock or precursor) and the energy for the production of carbon nanostructures. The production yield can be optimized by altering various parameters such as fuel profile, equivalence ratio, catalyst chemistry and structure, burner configuration and residence time. In the present report, diffusion and premixed flame synthesis methods are review... -
Effects of comonomer with carboxylic group on stabilization of high molecular weight polyacrylonitrile nanofibrous copolymers
Danyun Lei, Kesavan Devarayan1, Xiang-Dan Li, Woong-Ki Choi, Min-Kang Seo and Byoung-Suhk Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.4 9 290-294 (5 pages)
polyacrylonitrile (PAN) copolymers were studied. The extent of stabilization, evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, revealed that the CA comonomer could retard/control the stabilization rate of PAN, in contrast to the IA comonomer, which accelerated the stabilization process. Moreover, the synthesized PAN copolymers containing CA possessed higher Mv than those of the IA copolymers and also showed outstanding dimension stability of nanofibers during the stabilization, which may be... -
Modification of isotropic coal-tar pitch by acid treatments for carbon fiber melt-spinning
Mi Jung Yoo, Hyo Jun Ko, Yun-Soo Lim and Myung-Soo Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.4 3 247-254 (8 pages)
a proper SP range could be obtained at reaction temperatures of 280°C- 300°C, which were about 100°C lower than those for the case of thermal treatment only. With the acid treatments, the yield and SP of the precursor pitch increased dramatically and the formation of meso-phase was suppressed due to the lower reaction temperatures. Since the precursor pitches with acid and thermal treatment were not spinnable due to the inhomogeneity of properties such as molecular weight distribution and... -

Carbon nanospheres synthesized via solution combustion method: their application as an anode material and catalyst for hydrogen production
Vivek Dhand, M Venkateswer Rao, J. S. Prasad, Garima Mittal, Kyong Yop Rhee, Hyeon Ju Kim, Dong Ho Jung 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.3 7 198-202 (5 pages)
Amorphous agglomerates of carbon nanospheres (CNS) with a diameter range of 10-50 nm were synthesized using the solution combustion method. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) revealed a densely packed high surface area of SP2-hybridized carbon; however, there were no crystalline structural components, as can be seen from the scanning electron microscopy, HRTEM, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analyses. Electrochemical and thermo catalytic... -
Pitch based carbon fibers for automotive body and electrodes
Kap Seung Yang, Bo-Hye Kim, Seong-Ho Yoon 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 9 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.3 2 162-170 (9 pages)
Pitch is an attractive raw material for carbon fiber precursors due to its low cost stemming from its availability as a residue of coking and petroleum processes. Ford Motor Company reported a carbon fiber target price of $11.0/kg by using a fast cycle-time manufacturing method with carbon fiber in an inexpensive format, allowing for an average retail price of gasoline of $3.58/gallon. They also recommended the use of carbon fiber with strength of 1700 MPa, modulus of 170 GPa, and 1.5%...
