Hyphantria cunea(미국흰불나방)의 종령유충을 재료로 하여 혈구의 미세구조를 관찰한 바 5가지의 혈구를 구분해 냈다. Prohemocytes는 혈구 중에서 가장 작고 미분화된 세포기관을 가졌다. Plasmatocytes는 방추형 또는 난형으로 때로는 분엽상의 핵을 가지며 비교적 풍부한 세포기관을 가졌다. Granular hemocytes는 세포내에 몇가지 과립을 가지는 것이 특징이며 가장 풍부한 세포기관을 가졌다. Spherule cells은 몇가지 spherule을 가지는 것이 특징이며, Oenocytoids는 몇가지 발생단계의 것이 관찰되었으며 세포질내에 microtubule을 가지는 것이 특징이다.
The hemocytes of the last instar larvae of Hyphantria cunea were studied with the aid of electron microscope and 5types of hemocytes were noticed; prohemocytes, plasmatocytes, granular hemocytes, spherule cells and oenocytoids. Prohemocytes were round or oval with a large nucleus and with poorly developed cytoplasmic organelles. Plasmatocytes were spindle or oval with a relatively small nucleus. The spindle-shaped cells were subdivided into two forms following the morphology of the nucleus they had; lobulated and unlobulated. The oval cells could also be subdivided into two forms; one was much smaller(5$ imes$10$mu$) than the other(10$ imes$18$mu$). The granular hemocytes were characterized by electron-dense granules and inclusions embedded in cytoplasm. Certain granular hemocytes contained foreign cellular fractions of various sizes and shapes. In spherule cells, at least two kinds of spherules were found. Oenocytoids of various developmental stages were noticed, the last ones containing numerous bundles of microtubules.
