Percutaneous needle aspiration biopsy is a widely used method for obtaining specimens for cytologic bacteriologic or histologic examination. Because of the ability of CT scans to precisely localize lesions and biopsy needles along with the delinea-tion of adjacent structures diagnostic fine-needle aspiration under CT-guidance has become a quite safe and highly accurate procedure. 62 diagnostic fine-needle aspirations were performed in order to diagnose a suspected neoplastic or infec-tious disease. Most of these procedures were performed but not limited to the lung (24 cases) liver (15 cases) intraabdominal sites (9cases) Kidney (5 cases) pancreas (3 cases) and spine (2 cases). The overall accuracy for both suspected malignant malignant and infectious disease was 91%. An increase in sampling accuracy was demononstrated when there was immediate evaluation of the aspirated material by a cytopathologist using a "fast" stain techniques.echniques.
