With the development of real time US and CT, the detection of hepatoma is easier than before. Recently hepatic angiogram and transarterial chemoembolization(TAE) have been used in the treatment of hepatoma. The authors analyzed retrospectively the therapeutic effect of TAE in 32 cases of hepatoma. Changes of tumor volume were analyzed on the basis of CT follow up, angiogram, and US. The emulsion was prepared by mixing Adriamycin, Mitomycin-C, and lipiodol with or without Gelfoam. The total tumor response rate was 87%. The tumor response rate was 100% for Stage I (n=8), 85.7% for Stage ll(n=21), and 66% for Stage lll(n=3). The tumor response rate was 90% for noncirrhotic patients(n=10), and 86.4% for cirrhotic patients(n=22). The median survival of the total 32 patients was 7.6 months, TAE may improve tumor regression and the median survival patients.
