비병원성 세균인 Escherichia coli(ATCC25922)를 등검은메뚜기 성충 체내에 주입한 후, 조혈기관의 면역반응 양상과 과정을 투과전자현미경으로 관찰하였다. 조혈기관의 면역반응은 망상세포와 분화중인 혈구들의 식세포작용에 의해서 이루어졌다. 특히, 망상세포는 활발한 포식작용을 일으켜서 하나의 세포내에 여러개의 식포를 형성하고 있거나, 하나의 식포내에 다량의 세균들이 존재하고 있는 것이 관찰되었다. 소화과정은 식포가 일차 리소조옴과 융합하여 암화된 상태인 이차 리소조옴을 형성하였고, 최종적으로 이들 세포는 자가용해되거나 괴사되어 소화된 이물질과 함께 세포내용물이 혈림프로 방출되었다.
The injection of live Escherichia coli (ATCC29622) into the hemocoel of adults of grasshopper, Euprepocnemis shirakii, result in a phagocytosis of the number of reticular cells and differentiating hemocytes in hemopoietic organ. Injected bacteria are rapidly phagocytosed by reticular cells 10 minute after the injection. The phagocytic vesicles interact with the primary lysosome so that a range of enzymes discharged onto the ingested bacteria. The digested bacteria in phagocytic vesicles are changed to electron dense debris. The reticular cells have considerable phagocytic activity to engulfed a large number of bacteria. As a results, many reticular cells undergo lysis or necrosis, whereas others having engulfed fewer bacteria, succeed in breaking down the bacteria.
