An open-end(02) friction spinner was modified by attaching a filament feeding device to produce filament- core/cotton-sheath composite yarns. Using the modified friction spinner developed in this studies Polyester and spandex filament-core/cotton-wrap composite yarns have been produced with digreement levels of twist parameter and amount of wrapping fiber. Yarn characteristics such as tensile Properties, dimensional stability and yarn structure were 3valuated. In addition, cotton/filament composite yarns and 100% cotton ring spun yarns were woven to evaluate fabric properties such as shrinkage, abrasion resistance, tearing and tensile strength. The results obtained from this study are as follows: (1) The packing degree of cotton/filament composite yarn was improved with increasing the amount of wrapping fibers and the dimensional stability of the yarn tended to decrease with increasing the friction speed. The slippage between filament-core and cotton-sheath fibers was considerably reduced by subsequent plying, steaming and heat setting. (2) The fabric produced dom cotton/filament composite yarns showed substantial improvement of tensile strength, tearing strength, abrasion resistance and dimensional stabilityl compared with the equivalent fabric made from 100% cotton yarns. Thus, the faber produced by cotton/filament composite yarns can be applied to the end-uses requiring high-strengths durability and light-weight.
