This study was carried out to investigate the effects of glandular trichomes, known as an important factor in plant resistance to insects, of a cultivated species of potato, Solanum tuberosum cv. Dejima, on development of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae. There are two types of glandular trichomes on the foliage of S. tuberosum. Type A is a long trichome (125$pm$87.0 ${mu}{ extrm}{m}$ in length) with four-lobed membrane-bound gland(50.0$pm$0.0 ${mu}{ extrm}{m}$ in width) at its apex which exudes a clear viscous exudate and its density is 8.38$pm$1.59/$ extrm{mm}^2$. Type B is a shorter, simple trichome with an ovoid gland at its tip. When acetone extracts of glandular trichomes applied to the nymphs and adults of M. persicae, mortality of the nymphs was greatly increased, peaking at 88.3% 48 and 60 hrs after treatment, suggesting that the glandular trichome is highly advantageous in plant protection because it imposes greater mortality impacts on the target pest at immature stages.
