α,β-Unsaturated aldehydes and ketones are regioselectively reduced to the corresponding allylic alcohols with <TEX.$NaBH_4$</TEX>/Dowex1-x8 system in THF at room temperature. This system is also efficient for the conversion of α-diketones and acyloins to the vicinal diols in refluxing THF.
