The study was conducted to analyze the effect of group art therapy on the cognitive functions of the
elderly with dementia. The subjects were selected among the elderly with dementia who used “S” daycare
facility in city “D,” and who had guardian approval. Six were assigned to the experimental group, and six
were assigned to the control group. Sixty-minute sessions were conducted from March 2, 2015 to May 8,
2015. In order to analyze, the effect of the program, the K-MMSE index was used. The Wilcoxon
signed-ranks test was performed for the before-and after- and follow-up therapy scores. The results were as
follows. First, group art therapy had a positive impact on the overall scores of cognitive scores in the
elderly with dementia, as well as sub-areas such as time cognition and memory register. Second, group art
therapy had a positive impact on their works which were created and submitted in each quarter term. In
other to words, the group art therapy was effective in enhancing cognitive funtion of the elderly with
dementia.
