본 연구는 시각장애학교 도서관의 운영 실태와 학생들의 학교도서관에 대한 이용행태 및 인식을 파악하여 시각장애학교 도서관의 활성화 방안을 모색하고자 하였으며, 이를 위해 시각장애학교 도서관 담당자 11명과 전국 11개 시각장애학교에 재학 중인 청소년기의 시각장애학생 202명을 대상으로 설문조사를 하였다. 조사 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 시각장애학교 도서관은 대부분 예산과 전문 인력이 부족하였다. 도서관의 대체자료로는 점자도서가 가장 많은 반면 디지털음성도서, 촉각도서는 적은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 전반적으로 시각장애학교 도서관에 대한 학생들의 이용이 저조하였으며, 도서관 이용 시 애로사항은 관심분야의 자료 부족이라는 응답이 많았고, 학교도서관 자료의 다양성과 최신성이 부족한 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 시각장애학교 도서관의 활성화를 위해서는 적정한 예산의 확보와 이용자의 요구에 맞는 다양한 자료의 확충, 전문 인력의 배치가 필요하다.
This study was to seek plans to activate the libraries in the schools for the visual impairments by identifying the operating conditions of libraries in the schools for the visual impairments and students’ use patterns and perception of the school library and conducted a survey targeting 11 people responsible for the libraries in the schools for the visual impairments and 202 visually impaired students in their adolescence attending 11 schools for the visual impairments nationwide. The survey results can be summarized as follows: First, the budget and professionals were not enough in most libraries in the schools for the visual impairments. As alternative format materials in the library, braille books were found to be the most while DAISY, tactile books appeared to be fewer. Second, it was found that students do not use libraries in the schools for the visual impairments a lot and answered that there are not many materials in the field in which they are interested and variety and freshness of school library materials are insufficient. Third, in order to activate the libraries in the schools for the visual impairments, it is necessary to secure proper budget, expand various materials to meet the needs of users and place specialized personnel.
