본 연구의 목적은 제2 언어수업에서, 교사가 언어 변환을 통하여 목표언어와 학생들의 모국어를 선택하여 사용하는 경우, (i) 각 언어에 대한 최소한의 선택범위를 문헌연구를 통하여 탐구하고, (ii) 교사가 사용하는 언어변이형의 특성과 효과를 고찰하 여 우리나라 초등영어교육의 지침을 마련하는데 있다. 연구 결과에 따른 지침을 제시하면 다음과 같다. 성공적인 초등영어 수업을 위해서, 비 원어민 영어교사인 우리나라 초등영 어교사는 (a) 영어의 사용량을 최대로 늘리데, 모국어 사용이 오히려 학습에 유리한 경우(예: 훈육, 기법수행, 문화와 논평 등) 에는 제한적으로 모국어를 사용할 수 있으며, (b) 학생들의 이해를 위한 피드백의 수단으로 간결화된 변이형 보다 정교해진 변 이형(예: 느린 말, 반복된 말, 긴 휴지 등)을 입력의 수단으로 사용하여야 한다. 특히, 교사의 발음이 명확하다면, 초보단계의 학생들에게 큰 소리로 말할 필요는 없다.
The purposes of the present study are to suggest (i) the guideline balancing the target language and native language, (ii) and the guideline using the speech modifications through the research on teacher speech to the non-native teachers. The results of this study is as followings. In L2 classroom, (a) The rule of thumb is usually to restrict classroom language to the target language unless some distinct advantage is gained by the use of their native language. Examples of such advantages include negotiation of disciplinary factors, descriptions of how to carry out a technique, explanations of grammar points, meanings of words that remain confusing, cultural notes and comments, and so on. (b) Linguistic simplifications such as simpler syntax and simpler vocabulary do not have as significant an effect on L2 comprehension as elaborative modifications. teachers should try to use elaborated rather than simplified language. In other words, they should try to build in redundancy through the use of repetition, paraphrase and rhetorical markers rather than simplifying their grammar and vocabulary.
