본 연구는 전남 목포시 상동지역 여성노인의 일상생활과 복 지욕구에 대한 분석을 통해 빈곤여성노인들의 일의 의미를 이해하 고자 하는 것이었다. 연구방법은 3개의 사례집단에 대한 집단면접방 법을 통해 일상생활과 태도를 분석함과 동시에 욕구조사에 대한 양 적 통계자료를 보조적으로 활용했다. 연구 결과, 빈곤여성노인들에 게 있어서 일의 의미는 다른 집단과 다르게 나타났다. 우선 빈곤여 성들은 생활만족도나 자아존중감이 매우 낮은 편이었으며, 노부모부 양이나 세대의식의 측면에 있어서도 젊은 세대에 대한 관용적인 태 도를 보였다. 또 그들의 일은 여가와의 경계가 불분명한 상태이면서 일시적이고 단순한 노동이었지만, 부족한 생계비를 채우고 사회와 만나는 통로로서 의미를 가졌다. 아울러 빈곤여성들의 복지욕구는 점심제공, 의료혜택, 극히 적은 수입이라도 생길 수 있는 일거리 등 기본적인 욕구의 수준에 머무르고 있다. 이러한 연구결과는 노년기 의 생존과 정체감에서 일이 차지하는 위치와 일의 의미는 계층과 성별에 따라 다르다는 점을 이론적으로 제기해준다. 연구결과에서 얻을 수 있는 정책적인 시사점은 빈곤여성노인들을 위한 복지서비 스의 개발과 복지정책의 수립에서 지역사회에 기반을 두고 있는 경 로당이 단순한 오락시설 이상으로 활성화되어야 한다는 점이다.
The purpose of this paper was to understand the meaning of work among the poor elderly women through the analyses of their daily life and welfare needs. Daily life and their attitudes were investigated by the narrative data from three interview groups. Welfare needs were analyzed by need assessment research. The major finding of this study was that the meaning of work among the poor elderly women would be quite different from that of the elderly men or the upper/middle class elderly people. Their boundary of work and leisure was very ambiguous in their daily routine. In addition, their daily life was constructed around the welfare center for the elderly or senior house (Gyungro-dang). Self-esteem and the level of life satisfaction was very low. Their attitudes on children's support for parent has really been changed. They are very generous and submissive to the young generation. Their primary welfare needs are still very basic, like lunch service, health care, and trivial work for the tiny income. Practical implication of the finding for the welfare program and welfare policy is that the welfare center for the elderly or senior house can be utilized and activized not just as leisure space but as a kind of workplace for the poor elderly women because it is very important in their daily life. This paper also raised the theoretical discussion on the meaning of work among the poor elderly women.
