Religious belief or faith is double-sided; throughout the human history,
religions belief has been the source of the greatest happiness and greatest
misery for the mankind. In the positive side, religious belief helps people find
hope, comfort, and the meaning of life while it can also serve as a motivation
for performing morally right actions. In the negative side, however, religious
belief has been one of the main causes of conflicts, wars, hatred, and
confusion. In this paper, I will argue that one of the best solutions to
overcome the negative effects of religions faith is to adopt a skeptical attitude
towards religious belief. Although it is often considered that we should avoid a
skeptical attitude in order to lead a happy life, I will argue that a moderately
skeptical attitude toward religious belief is essential for preventing and relieving
the pain and misery caused by religious conflicts. To this end, I will offer a
detailed analysis of David Hume’s religious skepticism. Especially, I will focus
on Hume’s skeptical argument which he advances in the last chapter (XII) of
his Dialogues Concerning Human Understanding.
