The possibility of protecting one’s personal freedom while avoiding the dilemma of one’s personal happiness, as well as if one’s public concern as a citizen can cultivate along with one’s individualism is one of the major points this paper seeks to discover. This problem is directly relevant to what, and to what it really should be, the practicability of whether one can pursuit happiness given the fact that the post-modern concept of happiness protects, but does not marginalize, one’s identity by taking into account the nature of a modern citizen’s life of primary struggles to rejoice one’s unconstrained life without being impeded by another. This is due to the fact that if personal happiness is not pursued in means for the creation of a happy world through public interest or involvement and virtue in society, it will only create selfish people who have a fragmented value of happiness invested within materialism. Moreover, because the discussion of public happiness, in which ‘happiness with others’ is ‘my own happiness’ is closely associated with public freedom, the debate of public happiness will become clearer when the question of how this relationship between these two mutual theories will work together is examined. This paper will look into the discussion of personal happiness that is sought from individualism, the reason why personal happiness will undoubtedly transition into public happiness through historical consideration, the definition and concept of public happiness, and the requisites needed in order to make public happiness possible. Lastly, this paper will investigate the close ties between public happiness and the actions carried out by people by using the relationship of public happiness and public freedom as a main pivot point. Therefore, the possibility and limitations of public happiness overcoming personal happiness and becoming one will be pursued throughout the course of this paper.
