This paper focuses on Dante’s argument that the aim of mankind is the actualization of the possible intellect in the De Monarchia which aims to prove the necessity of temporal monarchy. I shall argue that his argument is based on Averroes’s so-called monopsychism found in his commentary on Aristotle’s De anima. However, there might be some objections to my interpretation since Dante’s remarks in other writings seem to be incompatible with his dependence upon Averroes. I wish to maintain that those objections are the result of misunderstanding Averroes as well as Dante. Finally I will attempt to justify my interpretation by appealing to the connection between Averroes’s account of religions and Dante’s universal monarchy.
