The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of MeFOT-based meditation activity
program on young children’s self-esteem formation and analyze how much those effects are
different according to young children’s gender. The program is a combination of conventional
meditation activities and MeFOT-based thinking activity.
For the purpose, this researcher sampled 55 five-year-old children from H kindergarten located
in Busan and divided them into the experimental and control groups, respectively having 28 and
27 members. To measure young children’s self-esteem, this study used Kim Young Sook’s(1997)
modified and supplemented version of “Self-Esteem Scale for 5 to 6 Year-Old Children”, a
self-perception inventory for preschool children developed by Harter and Pike(1984).
Findings of this study can be summarized as follows.
First, it was found that MeFOT-based meditation activity effectively improves young children’s
self-esteem as a whole and all of its sub-areas like cognitive performance, poor acceptance,
physical ability, acceptance of mother and self-acceptance, whether those children are male or
female.
