This paper attempts to understand the parents’ motivation to involvement for helping their children
succeed in school. For this purpose, first of all, the role of the parents’ motivation which is accounted
Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler’s model of the parental involvement process is examined. And then, the
parents’ motivation to involvement for helping their children succeed in school is applied to
self-determination theory through conceptualization and classification. Studies shows that the parents’
motivation to involvement for helping their children succeed in school has the possibility to change the
extrinsic motivation into the intrinsic motivation, according to the internalization of social value by the
amount of parents’ self-determination. The separation between the parents’ motivation to involvement for
helping their children succeed in school toward parents themselves and toward their children need to be
researched further. Findings in this paper can provide parents, teachers, and educators with a wide-ranging
understanding and substantial information about parents’ participation for helping their children succeed in
school.
