본 연구는 국내에서 발행된 세 종류의 어린이 영자신문(A, B, C)에 사용된 영어 어휘를 비교·분석함으로써 실제 영 어 수업에서 영자신문의 활용 가능성을 제시하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 코퍼스 분석을 위해 국내에서 발행된 세 종류의 어린 이 영자신문을 연구 대상으로 선정하였으며, 코퍼스 분석 도구를 활용하여 어휘의 규모, 어휘 사용의 다양성, 기본어휘의 반 영률 등의 측면에서 비교·분석을 실시하였다. 본 연구를 통해 도출된 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 어휘의 외형적 규모를 분석 한 결과 세 영자신문 중에서 A 영자신문이 비교적 다양한 어휘를 사용하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 반면, 어휘의 품사별 구성은 서로 비슷한 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 세 영자신문의 고빈출 어휘는 높은 일치율을 보였으며, 대부분 기능어로 이루어 져 있었다. 품사군별 고빈출 어휘 비교 결과에서는 특히 전치사군 어휘의 일치율이 가장 높았다. 셋째, 세 영자신문은 평균 적으로 2009, 2015개정 영어과 교육과정의 기본어휘를 70%정도 반영하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 신문별 어휘 수준은 C 영자신문이 가장 높았고, 이어서 A, B 영자신문의 순서로 높게 나타났다. 본 연구를 통해 어린이 영자신문이 영어 어휘 교육의 보조자료로서 적합한 어휘 수준을 가지고 있으며, 학습자의 수준에 맞는 영자신문을 적절히 활용한다면 효과적인 어 휘 학습에 도움이 될 수 있을 것이라는 시사점을 얻을 수 있었다.
This study analysed and compared the vocabulary of three English newspapers (A, B, C) published in Korea for children. For this purpose, newspaper articles were compiled for making corpus, and several corpus tools were used for analysing the vocabulary scale and comparing with basic vocabulary lists. The major findings from this study are as follows. First, among the three newspapers, A seems to use a relatively diverse range of vocabulary. On the other hand, the three newspapers are similar in POS(Part-of-Speech) composition. Second, the high-frequency words were similar between the three newspapers and the most similar were function words. Third, the vocabulary of three newspapers was covered with about 70% of the basic word list of the 2009 and 2015 Korean national English curriculum. Fourth, C was the highest, and A was higher than B in vocabulary level. B seems to have the most appropriate vocabulary level for elementary English vocabulary education based on the comparison with the basic word lists. The results of this study suggest that English newspapers, although they can be very effective supplementary materials for students’ English vocabulary learning, should be used with a careful analysis of the vocabulary level and the contents.
