과거와는 달리 2016년 이후 모든 영어권 국가는 통일영어점자를 사용하기 시작하였다. 이 연구의 목적은 우리나라에서 채택하여 사용해 온 미국영어점자 규정과 새롭게 도입될 통일영어점자 규정을 비교함으로써 한국 점자 규정 개정 방향을 도출하는 것이었다. 미국영어점자와 비교할 때 통일영어점자는 용어, 약자, 문장 부호, 대문자표기, 글자체, 악센트와 변음 부호, 숫자 표기, 1급 점자표, 컴퓨터 자료 점역 등이 개정 되었다. 이러한 통일영어점자 규정을 검토한 결과 한국 점자 규정 개정의 방향은 점자와 묵자의 일관성 확대, 점형 구성의 체계화, 약자 관련 예외 규정 축소, 점자의 부피보다 표기의 정확성 우선 고려, 점역과 역점역 프로그램 개발의 최적화, 분야 간 점자 규정의 통합화, 점자 규정의 국제화 등이었다.
The purpose of this study was to explore the directions for revising the rules of the Korean Braille Code by comparing the rules of the Unified English Braille (UEB) with those of the English Braille American Edition (EBAE). The results of the comparative analyses implied the following directions for revising the rules of Korean braille: (a) maximizing the one-to-one correspondence between braille and regular print; (b) systemizing the composition of braille dot formation; (c) minimizing the exceptions of the contraction-related rules; (d) prioritizing the correct encoding over the reduction of braille volume; (e) optimizing the rules for digitizing Korean braille; (f) integrating the braille rules across the literary and technical areas; and (g) globalizing the rules of Korean braille.
