The purpose of this study is to apprehend the characteristics of the studies
related to students with visual impairments and understand the study participation of
visually impaired students from the point of view of disability studies. For this, the
visually impaired students-related articles announced in certain academic journals(‘The
Korean Journal of Visual Impairment,’ ‘BJVI,’ ‘JBVI’) during the recent 5
years(2011-2015) were reviewed. The literature collection result by the standards set
by this study demonstrated 13 articles were proper as a target of literature review.
The review target papers were classified into the inter-journal characteristics,
characteristics by themes, and participation level of visually impaired students. The
inter-journal characteristics showed the articles announced in ‘BJVI’ set the visually
impaired students as a study target more frequently than the articles announced in
‘The Korean Journal of Visual Impairment’ and ‘JVIB’. The characteristics by themes
were classified into 4 large themes(education, life, training, and perception). The
interpretation on the participation level of visually impaired students from the point
of view of disability studies showed the visually impaired students were expressed
actively or the responsibility of schools or teachers was emphasized.
This study suggests the active participation of visually impaired students is
important in resolving their difficulties. In addition, this study suggests visually
impaired students’ opinions need to be reflected through the research methods such
as the interview.
