Objective : This research aims to examine the causes of accidents and risk factors that can occur while
driving by using Korean Self-Report Safe Driving Behavior Measure (K-SDBM) for drivers aged
65 or over in the taxi service industry, in accordance with the aging society.
Methods : The Korean Self-Report Safe Driving Behavior Measure (K-SDBM) was carried out on 32 drivers
in the taxi service industry in Busan, for four weeks from February 1st to March 30th, 2015.
Results : 1. In a driving situation that requires concentration, more than 50% of respondents answered ‘a
little difficult, in all factors.’
2. For a general driving skill, 17 respondents (53.1%) answered it is a ‘little difficult’ to keep
the lane in an area with a blurry lane, uneven road, and no marking, while the other items
were mostly answered ‘not difficult.’
3. In an external environment and weather, all items were mostly answered ‘a little difficult’ and
‘very difficult.’
4. In terms of space and distance, 19 people (59.4%) answered it is ‘a little difficult’ to park
in a dark space or at night, and other items were usually answered ‘not difficult.’
5. The correlation between the research subjects’ general characteristics and factors had a
significant difference with ‘parallel parking to fit the space in a parking lot,’ in terms of their
age and work. The correlation also showed a significant difference (P<0.05) in ‘reading a road
sign in advance at a discreet distance’ in terms of work hour.
Conclusion : The research result analyzed and demonstrated the causes of accidents that can occur while elderly
drivers are driving. The result will be used as a clinical and foundational data of the Korean
Self-Report Safe Driving Behavior Measure (K-SDBM) for various elders. Also, a more
systemized driving evaluation should be implemented for elders.
