Objective : The purpose of this study is to understand the conditions of safety education and therapists’
awareness focusing on therapists employed at special education support centers and to suggest
their importance.
Method : A survey was conducted targeting therapists employed at special education support centers in
Ulsan area from May 2st 2013 to May 31st 2013. A total number of 21 surveys were used
for valid data. As for data analysis, SPSS 17.0 version was used to conduct data analysis.
Descriptive statistics, a regression analysis, and ANOVA were employed.
Result : More study subjects answered to have experience in safety education in special education
support centers and most of them received safety education through university curriculums.
Epilepsy and seizure were the most frequent aspects of safety education, while it was pointed
out that first aid education lacked the most for safety education. The number of experience in
safety accidents mostly ranged from 1~5, while most of the test subjects answered to
experience mental damage as the most difficult situation during a safety accident. Safety
accidents occurred mostly in therapy rooms, and most of the test subjects answered that the
centers were barely equipped with data for safety education. Post-treatment after an safety
accident was handled mostly by therapists in charge, and a relationship with parents indicated
the most difficult situation while processing a safety accident.
Conclusion : In this study, it was investigated out that 15 therapists (71.4%) have experience safety
accidents, while 20 therapists (95.4%) answered that safety education is necessary to prevent
safety accidents. To do so, it was investigated that safety education is necessary through
regular therapy training held by administrative institutions. Therefore, administrative institutions
must provide safety accident prevention education to protect disabled children and therapist
alike.
