The purpose of this study is to understand sexuality experiences of adults with developmental
disability in terms of sexual desire, sexual behavior, and sex perception. Employing qualitative
case study methods, the study including four adults with developmental disability, whose ages
were over 19, was analyzed. The results of this study are as follows.
Sexual desire includes ‘pursuit of sensual pleasure’, ‘sensual motion to confirm love for each
other’, and ‘a means to expect partner’s love’. Sexual behavior was revealed as four categories:
‘self-sexuality’, ‘sexual intercourse’, ‘prostitution experience’, and ‘sacrificial victim of sexual
abuse’. And sex perception was shown as ‘extension of romantic love’, ‘self-censorship through
sexual norms’, ‘roaming between sexual modesty and sexual debauchery’, ‘psychological
resistance’, ‘sex play’, and ‘harmful behavior to make himself or herself in danger’.
Based on these results, the present study suggested five issues: “People with developmental
disability consider their sexuality with dual perspectives”, “They pursue sexual normality”,
“They employ their sexuality as tool of psychological transaction and resistance”, “Chances
for them to experience sex are very limited”, and “They are victims as well as offenders
of sexual assault.”
