Humans are a puzzling species in the animal world. While they are inferior
to other animals in many physical and biological abilities, they survived
successfully, and furthermore produced ingenious technologies, complex societies,
sophisticated academic disciplines and arts. They are builders or creators of
civilization. What is the secret of human success? Evolutionary theorists have
offered various answers in the form of genetic evolution, cultural evolution, and
gene-culture coevolution. But they don't explain sufficiently how human
progress takes place, especially in the realm of academic discipline and art.
This paper is to introduce an unique unprecedented hypothetical idea called
educative evolution suggested by Sangho Chang. Educative evolution is expected
to be an alternative to explain human successful evolution or progress. Human
culture, especially academic discipline and art, has evolved and progressed
through educational activities from generation to generation. Examining the idea
of educative evolution, this paper found that academic discipline and art have
co-progressed with education. This phenomenon of co-progress is expected to
suggest many interesting and valuable research topics for theorizing educative
evolution.
