It is critical to have qualified workplace trainers for successful Apprenticeships in Korea. In this sense,
the purpose of this study was to analyze training needs of workplace trainers based on competencies
required for workplace trainers participating in Korean Apprenticeships. This study conducted surveys to
the 825 workplace trainers who participated and completed training programs of a basic course of
workplace trainers as of September, 2009 for investigating needs of competencies required for workplace
trainers. A total of 421 trainers finally responded to the survey. Then, the study analyzed the priorities
of training needs using the methods of Borich and the Locus for Focus. The results of the research
showed that ‘planning training’, ‘developing materials’, and ‘training skills’ were highly ranked in both
the Borich and the Locus for Focus. In addition, ‘developing training media’, ‘planning training
programs’, ‘evaluating training’, and ‘S-OJT knowledge’ were indicated as secondly highly needed
competencies in either the Borich or the Locus for Focus. Therefore, these competencies were identified
for essentially needed components for training of workplace trainers. Based on the results of the study,
several suggestions and future directions for study were discussed to develop workplace trainers in more
systematic ways.
