This study researched the various methods for evaluating sign language competence and sign language
interpretation in Korea and foreign countries. Results are followed. First, standardized evaluation tool and
rating scale were usually used to evaluate sign language competence of deaf children, and interview and
rubric rating scale were used to evaluate sign language competence of the hearing. Second, both of
quantitative and qualitative evaluation were used to evaluate sign language interpretation ability.
Interpretation accuracy and rating scale were usually used to quantitative evaluation of sign language.
Expression features analysis at the level of word, phrase and sentence occurred between spoken language
and sign language were used to qualitative evaluation of sign language.
Henceforth task for evaluation on sign language competence and sign language interpretation ability are
followed. First, it is necessary to develop sign language evaluation tool reflecting these features through
studying linguistics of Korean sign language. Second, transdisciplinary researches among interpreting experts
and sign language experts are necessary to evaluate sign language ability.
